Where to scan in vista?
XP is definately more stable than RISC OS given the range of hardware that is designed to operate on, applications are down to user knowledge/experience. Even calling-up a menu results in several seconds of chuggling (as I call it) before the menu appears, and this is exactly the same in Vista.

Faster than you could navigate to it on the menu. For Win XP hold the Windows key and press "R", then type calc. Vista consumes more cycles for the OS itself, and that's what I don't like so much about it. There are a couple nice things about the interface, but there are a lot more things about it that stink.

Start Menu Resets Back To Alphabetical Order
When shutting down I go to the start menu and down in the far left corner is a little itty bitty button that if I tag it with the pointer a menu comes up which allow me I am trying to teach a client how to use her new computer. Thanks in advance. Ditch Vista and go back to XP. Vista sucks camel butt. Seriously.

MS Update won't install on Vista with SP1.
At least for XP that is not true - probably not true for Vista as well. What gets invalidated is the menu for the boot loader. For XP, this menu is in the boot.ini file in which "partition()" is the parameter which refers to the no. of the partition in which the OS resides, and "rdisk()" is the parameter which

If the first drive is XP in the bios, by default it will boot into XP without requests. If you want Vista then you must use the boot menu. Vista bootmngr when used with XP can be a real hassle. Because if you decide to get rid of Vista Xp will not boot anymore if Vista was using botmngr for both drives.

I don't have what you describe on my Dell Vista box. If it's a default Vista setup there should be a button with an arrow to the lower _right_ not _left_ (I'm somewhat dyslexic myself--I have to triple check on directions sometimes) of the menu that comes up where "start" would be on an XP box that gets the options
